My Unforgettable Internship at Dash Arts in London

As a 21-year-old college student majoring in Media, Television, and Production with a minor in Art Management at Indiana University, my internship at Dash Arts in London was a dream come true, fulfilling my lifelong aspiration of travelling to the UK. I needed a change and some direction in my life and that experience gave me exactly that. Stepping away from my usual studies for a semester to immerse myself in the vibrant world of Dash Arts was nothing short of transformative.

Dash Arts isn’t just an arts organisation; it’s a movement. They craft exceptional artistic experiences by listening to stories around them and sharing them in workshops and unique productions, often in unconventional ways. They bring theatre out of the theatre, colliding with real life through interactions with non-professional performers and encounters with ideas and people you might not usually meet. Founded in 2005 by Josephine Burton and Tim Supple, Dash Arts has created award-winning work with over 10,000 artists and participants, reaching audiences of over 400,000 worldwide.

From day one, I knew this wasn’t going to be a typical internship. My first Wednesday, in person, was a whirlwind of introductions and absorbing the inner workings of the organization. I constantly found myself pondering one core question: How does Dash Arts ensure that their art accurately expresses the community? This question wasn’t just a fleeting thought—it was at the heart of everything Dash Arts did. It influenced how we crafted productions, measured impact, secured funding, and managed budgets. Every discussion, every challenge, and every victory was tied back to this central theme.

One of the most exciting projects I participated in was the donor’s party. This event was a unique opportunity to meet many of the organisation's donors, discuss an upcoming project called Our Public House, and ask for their support. The atmosphere at the party was buzzing with energy. I saw firsthand how the team presented the project, highlighting its community impact and artistic vision. It was fascinating to observe how they navigated the delicate art of fundraising, balancing genuine passion for the project with the practical need for financial support. Engaging with the donors, understanding their interests, and seeing their reactions to the project provided valuable insights into the world of arts funding and the people behind Dash Arts.

Additionally, my time at Dash Arts offered a deep dive into the heart of London’s vibrant theatre scene. By learning about the development of Dash Arts' productions, I discovered the unique funding challenges faced by arts organizations, especially in the aftermath of the 2010 financial crisis and the pandemic. This experience inspired me to care more deeply about the financial sustainability of the arts. Seeing firsthand how funding issues impact creativity and community engagement made me more passionate about advocating for increased support and finding innovative solutions to ensure the arts continue to thrive.

When I wasn’t immersed in Dash Arts projects, I was exploring the wonders of London and beyond. Each weekend was an opportunity to discover a new city, each with its own unique charm and cultural tapestry. I was captivated by Edinburgh’s historic ambiance and rich cultural heritage. I will always remember Barcelona’s lively culture and architectural marvels, especially Gaudí’s masterpieces. I also got the opportunity to see Cambridge’s academic prestige and picturesque landscapes, which made for a charming visit. Last but not least, I experienced Amsterdam’s relaxed vibe, scenic canals, and rich history created a perfect escape.

This entire summer and internship has truly been a privilege and I feel so beyond lucky that I was given this opportunity. The generosity and wisdom of my colleagues made my internship truly special. Dash Arts’ dedication to thorough research and deep investigation before developing their art is something I deeply admire and will always carry with me. I eagerly anticipate seeing a Dash Arts production on a future visit to London. My time at Dash Arts was more than an internship; it was an adventure filled with learning, exploration, and growth. I can’t wait to carry the lessons and experiences I’ve gathered back to the States and into my future career.
